Q: Can I chew gum if I get braces?

Dr. Herman's Answer: Yes! I encourage my patients to chew gum, but it must be sugar-free gum. Several studies have shown that chewing gum after orthodontic appointments decreases initial discomfort. Sugarless gum does not increase the risk of damage to braces. Also with the Damon System of Braces, eating popcorn is permitted. The smaller brackets and the elimination of the tie wires prevent popcorn from getting stuck. You still cannot eat popcorn if you have the larger traditional braces. If you want to find out more about how little the Damon System of Braces changes your eating habits, call 505-564-900 for your free consultation.
